The Basics

When should I get my oil changed?

Most manufacturers suggest changing oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Check your owner’s manual for complete details.

Isn’t all oil the same?

No. Regular motor oil is made from crude oil, which is an excellent lubricant but can break down over time. Synthetic oil is modified regular oil designed to lubricate better and last longer.

What does motor oil do?

Oil does several important things, including:

Lubrication
Corrosion protection
Cooling
Contaminant transfer

What is viscosity?

How easily oil pours at a given temperature is called its viscosity. Viscosity ratings are set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
