Batteries FAQ

How often should I check my battery?

A good general rule is every three to five years … or:

  • Any time your car has been sitting for a long time.
  • If there are things using battery power even when your car is turned off. These can include cell phone chargers, GPS systems or radar detectors.
  • If you left a light on after turning off the engine.
  • During periods of extreme heat or cold.
Why is the battery light on?

The battery light may not mean there’s a problem with the battery itself. The problem may be with the alternator, which recharges the battery. When you see this warning light, turn off as many electrical systems as possible, such as stereos and air conditioners, and have the issue checked as soon as possible.

What is the battery charging system?

The charging system keeps a charge in your battery and provides electrical energy for the radio, lights and other features while the car is running. The modern charging system consists of the alternator, battery, wiring and electronic control unit (ECU). Older cars may have a regulator, but in newer cars that is now part of the car’s computer.
